A very absorbing book. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and matronly ladies like Margaret Rutherford, Peggy Mount, and Hattie Jacques were what I looked upon as figures of authority. To the youth of today, this kind of imposing female figure has, largely, disappeared, which is quite sad.

Margaret Rutherford's life was far from straightforward/5. This is a wonderful book and very complete with facts of her life - but the book Margaret Rutherford "A Blithe Spirit" by Simmons is more personal - that book I would rate with 4 stars also.

Both books are complete in their own way. Dreadnought was shipped from England - is arrived in perfect condition - and I believe never read - very pleased /5(). A great look at the life of the wonderful actress Margaret Rutherford, as well as her husband and acting partner, Mr. Stringer Davis.

The book provides background on the family history of depression - her mother committed suicide and her father killed his father and spent many years in an asylum/5(17).

Rare is the reference to Margaret Rutherford that doesn't characterize her as either jut-chinned, eccentric, or both. The combination of those most mundane of attributes has led some to suggest that she was made for the role of Agatha Christie's indomitable sleuth, Jane Marple, whom Rutherford portrayed in four films between and plus in an uncredited film cameo in.
